Silicon control of bacterial and viral diseases in plants
Silicon plays an important role in providing tolerance to various abiotic stresses and augmenting plant resistance against diseases. However, there is a paucity of reports about the effect of silicon on bacterial and viral pathogens of plants. In general, the effect of silicon on plant resistance against bacterial diseases is considered to be due to either physical defense or increased biochemi...

Lactose-fermenting Salmonella from dried milk and milk-drying plants.
A study of 552 salmonella cultures revealed that 86 (15.6%) of the cultures fermented lactose. These had been isolated from dried milk products and milk-drying plants. Acid and gas were produced in lactose broth. Solid media containing lactose as the key ingredient for the differential reaction were not satisfactory for recognizing salmonella colonies. No problem was encountered in selecting sa...
Resistance to Bacterial Pathogens in Plants
To successfully infect a plant, pathogens must overcome three layers of defense: (1) preformedphysical barriers; (2) a cell-surface-based surveillance system that detects conserved pathogenmolecules and (3) an intracellular surveillance system that detects effector proteins injected into host cells. Bacterial plant pathogens overcome the first layer either by invading through natural openings a...
Molecular genetic control of leaf lifespan in plants - A review
Leaf senescence constitutes the last stage of leaf development in plants and proceeds through a highly regulated program in order to redistribution of micro- and macro-nutrients from the senescing leaves to the developing/growing plant organs. Initiation and progression of leaf senescence is accompanied by massive sequential alterations at various levels of leaf biology including leaf morpholog...
